Chapter Fourteen
âSo, where does she sleep?â Max asked.
âIn the bed.â
âWhere do you sleep?â
âWhere do you think?â I said.
Her head whipped around so fast, I thought it was going to pop off. âWhat? No fucking way.â
I laughed. âNah, I cleared off the couch and I sleep on it.â
âWhat? You have a couch?â she said.
âShut the hell up. Where was I supposed to put all my clothes?â
âIn the closet?â
âEh. They were fine there,â I said with a shrug.
âWhere are they now?â
âOn the kitchen table.â
Max laughed. âSo when are you all moving?â
âIâm going to go sign the lease today, actually. As soon as I get off work,â I said.
âWow. I thought you were going to wait awhile.â
âYeah but whatâs the point? Itâs going to only get crowded and I need somewhere bigger. And itâll be nice to actually have hot water every time I want it,â I said. I threw my cigarette down. âReady?â
âYeah. So, Tyller. Do you think sheâs going to live with you after the baby is born?â
I glanced at her. âI dunno. Maybe.â
âThis isnât like Kristy, you know,â Max said quietly.
âI know.â
âItâs different.â
âI know,â I repeated. âItâs not the same at all.â
âOkay.â
âOkay,â I said.
âWhere is this new place at again?â
âAmber Heights. Itâs the complex behind the old Sears building,â I said.
âIsnât that where Debbie and I lived back when it was Gaslight?â
âYep. But itâs totally redone now,â I said.
âCool. Thatâs not too far from me,â she said.
âI know.â
âWe could get away from the wives and have a boyâs night. They could bake or something,â she said.
âShut up. Youâre so stupid,â I said with a laugh. But something about what she said was oddly appealing to me.
âWhy donât you come by after you look at the apartment?â she said.
âAlright, weâll do that.â
âSo she is going with you?â she asked.
âWell yeah. Itâs going to be her place too for awhile.â
We stopped at the middle to head to our separate assignments. âTyller, take this with all the love I got for you in the world.â
âWhatâs that?â I said.
âYou are in way over your head, motherfucker,â she said. âBless your heart.â
I winked at her and grinned.
âI can handle it. Youâll see,â I said.

I went to the HR office as soon as the final buzzer sounded. âIs Daylee around?â I asked one of the girls that sat up front.
She looked me up and down. âYeah, hold on.â She picked up her phone. âGladys, could you tell Daylee that her boyfriend is here.â Then she looked at me. âSheâll be right out.â
âHey, Marcie. I heard that Tommy broke up with you. Is it because youâre a raging bitch or because you slept with his dad?â I asked. Her mouth dropped open and she glared at me.
âYou can wait out there,â she said.
âThanks, sweetheart,â I said. I walked out to the chairs in the hall. A few minutes later, Daylee came through the door. âReady?â I asked.
âYeah. Hey, whatâd you say to Marcie? She looked pissed,â she said as we walked to the truck.
âReally? I donât know. Must be having a bad day or something,â I said.
