Chapter Fourteen

“So, where does she sleep?” Max asked.

“In the bed.”

“Where do you sleep?”

“Where do you think?” I said.

Her head whipped around so fast, I thought it was going to pop off. “What? No fucking way.”

I laughed. “Nah, I cleared off the couch and I sleep on it.”

“What? You have a couch?” she said.

“Shut the hell up. Where was I supposed to put all my clothes?”

“In the closet?”

“Eh. They were fine there,” I said with a shrug.

“Where are they now?”

“On the kitchen table.”

Max laughed. “So when are you all moving?”

“I’m going to go sign the lease today, actually. As soon as I get off work,” I said.

“Wow. I thought you were going to wait awhile.”

“Yeah but what’s the point? It’s going to only get crowded and I need somewhere bigger. And it’ll be nice to actually have hot water every time I want it,” I said. I threw my cigarette down. “Ready?”

“Yeah. So, Tyller. Do you think she’s going to live with you after the baby is born?”

I glanced at her. “I dunno. Maybe.”

“This isn’t like Kristy, you know,” Max said quietly.

“I know.”

“It’s different.”

“I know,” I repeated. “It’s not the same at all.”

“Okay.”

“Okay,” I said.

“Where is this new place at again?”

“Amber Heights. It’s the complex behind the old Sears building,” I said.

“Isn’t that where Debbie and I lived back when it was Gaslight?”

“Yep. But it’s totally redone now,” I said.

“Cool. That’s not too far from me,” she said.

“I know.”

“We could get away from the wives and have a boy’s night. They could bake or something,” she said.

“Shut up. You’re so stupid,” I said with a laugh. But something about what she said was oddly appealing to me.

“Why don’t you come by after you look at the apartment?” she said.

“Alright, we’ll do that.”

“So she is going with you?” she asked.

“Well yeah. It’s going to be her place too for awhile.”

We stopped at the middle to head to our separate assignments. “Tyller, take this with all the love I got for you in the world.”

“What’s that?” I said.

“You are in way over your head, motherfucker,” she said. “Bless your heart.”

I winked at her and grinned.

“I can handle it. You’ll see,” I said.

I went to the HR office as soon as the final buzzer sounded. “Is Daylee around?” I asked one of the girls that sat up front.

She looked me up and down. “Yeah, hold on.” She picked up her phone. “Gladys, could you tell Daylee that her boyfriend is here.” Then she looked at me. “She’ll be right out.”

“Hey, Marcie. I heard that Tommy broke up with you. Is it because you’re a raging bitch or because you slept with his dad?” I asked. Her mouth dropped open and she glared at me.

“You can wait out there,” she said.

“Thanks, sweetheart,” I said. I walked out to the chairs in the hall. A few minutes later, Daylee came through the door. “Ready?” I asked.

“Yeah. Hey, what’d you say to Marcie? She looked pissed,” she said as we walked to the truck.

“Really? I don’t know. Must be having a bad day or something,” I said.
